The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering conducting a mock presidential election and a full audit of its electoral technology systems as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this in Abuja during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery.
He said the proposals were driven by concerns from the 2023 general elections, particularly issues related to the reliability of election technology.
According to Amupitan, the commission plans to test its systems and processes through a simulated presidential poll while also auditing key technologies ahead of the elections.
The measures would include reviewing platforms such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), alongside strengthening cybersecurity through system testing and disaster recovery strategies.
Although the proposals are not currently included in INEC’s budget, the commission says it will explore ways to implement them due to their importance in improving electoral credibility.
Amupitan stressed that public trust in elections depends largely on the reliability of the commission’s technology, adding that INEC remains committed to addressing past challenges and delivering transparent and credible elections in 2027.
He also noted ongoing collaboration with international partners, including the United Kingdom, to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
