The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described Saturday’s bye-elections in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states as important operational tests ahead of the 2027 General Election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, said the polls would provide lessons for improving the Commission’s logistics, technology, and field operations before the nationwide elections.
Amupitan spoke while monitoring the elections from INEC’s National Situation Room at its headquarters in Abuja.
The Commission conducted polls in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi, and Udu State Constituency in Delta.
Amupitan said the Commission should not treat bye-elections as routine exercises, adding that each poll provides an opportunity to identify operational gaps and strengthen its systems.
He also said challenges encountered before polling were identified and addressed, while assuring Nigerians that INEC would continue to improve its processes ahead of the 2027 elections.
INEC has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections will hold on February 6, 2027.
