Nigerian actress and media personality Temi Otedola has said she openly identifies as a “nepo baby,” stressing that acknowledging privilege is a matter of honesty, not a dismissal of hard work.
Speaking on The How Far Podcast, which she co-hosts with her husband, singer Mr Eazi, Temi Otedola explained that privilege extends beyond fame and includes access to financial stability, quality education, and opportunities.
“You don’t have to be famous to be privileged,” she said, noting that growing up without financial struggle and with access to basic needs already places individuals at an advantage.
The daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola also described nepotism as the advantage gained through personal connections. She illustrated this with a hypothetical scenario in which parents use their network and resources to support a child’s career.
Temi Otedola maintained that admitting such advantages should not be controversial, adding that she finds it surprising when people refuse to acknowledge them.
“You can never catch me saying I’m not a nepo baby,” she said. “I was given a leg up, and I’ve made the most of it.”
She concluded that recognizing privilege does not take away from personal effort but rather reflects an honest understanding of one’s starting point.
