Gusau, NFF Board Members Step Down

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, and other members of the federation’s board have reportedly resigned amid mounting pressure over the management of Nigerian football.

The development follows a series of poor performances by Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history. The Falcons lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations before suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in a playoff, ending their World Cup hopes.

The NFF has also come under scrutiny over the management of the Federal Government’s ₦17 billion intervention fund approved in 2024 to settle outstanding salaries, allowances and bonuses owed to national teams.

Reports indicate that the Department of State Services (DSS) and other agencies are investigating the utilisation of the funds, while pressure had continued to mount on the Gusau-led board to step down.

The resignations could also affect the NFF board elections scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. However, the full details of the resignations and the next steps for the federation are yet to be officially announced.
