The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned an alleged attack on its members during a ward meeting in Enugu State, saying eight people sustained gunshot injuries.
The incident reportedly occurred at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuofia, in Nkanu West Local Government Area, where party members had gathered for a state-wide monthly ward meeting.
According to a statement by Sampson Ukwu, media aide to the NDC governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, suspected political thugs invaded the meeting venue, opened fire and vandalised canopies, chairs and party materials.
The eight injured members were identified as Onovo Donald Ekene, Ngene Godwin Madueke, Ogbodo Gloria, Onovo Victor, Maduabuchi Ugwu, Nnaemeka Nelson, Chinonso Nwagbara and Obinna Daniel Owo.
Ohaa condemned the attack as an attempt to intimidate opposition supporters ahead of the 2027 election and called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators and prosecute them.
He also alleged that similar attacks had occurred during political gatherings in Akpugo and Obe wards in Nkanu West.
“We will not be intimidated. We will not abandon our people,” Ohaa said, insisting that the NDC would continue its campaign peacefully ahead of the 2027 election.
“Enough of this madness,” he added.
