The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Gombe State, Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over an alleged online smear campaign ahead of the 2027 election.
In the petition, Gwamna accused unnamed individuals of cyberbullying, criminal defamation, and spreading false claims, including reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which he described as untrue.
Sources familiar with the matter said he requested an investigation by the Nigeria Police National Cybercrime Centre, with possible involvement of INTERPOL, following intelligence that some of the accounts behind the posts may be operating from outside Nigeria.
The petition reportedly asked authorities to obtain subscriber data and digital evidence from social media platforms, identify those responsible, and prosecute offenders, while also ensuring the removal of the disputed content.
Observers say the move highlights growing concerns over misinformation in Nigeria’s political space as the 2027 elections approach.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the EFCC had issued an official response.
