The Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF) has urged President Bola Tinubu to reverse the latest increase in the pump price of petrol, warning that it will worsen the economic hardship facing Nigerians.
The forum made the call in a statement signed by its Chairman, Elder Sunday Oibe, on Thursday.
NOSCEF said Nigerians were already struggling with rising food and transport costs, unemployment, insecurity, and declining purchasing power. It warned that another increase in petrol prices would put further pressure on households and businesses.
The latest increase followed a rise in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s petrol gantry price from N1,265 to N1,350 per litre on September 12. Pump prices have subsequently risen to about N1,395-N1,450 per litre at some filling stations in Lagos and Abuja.
The elders urged the Federal Government to seek sustainable sources of revenue instead of repeatedly passing higher costs on to citizens.
They also called on Tinubu to use the remaining period of his administration to address the rising cost of living, create jobs, improve security, and rehabilitate critical infrastructure.
“The patience of Nigerians should not be mistaken for acceptance of perpetual hardship,” the forum said.
