Five Die in Crash Involving Niger Governor’s Convoy

Five people have reportedly died in a road accident involving a vehicle in Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s convoy along the Minna–Bida Road.

The accident occurred on Monday at Gidan Mongoro, near Minna, when a government-owned Toyota Hilux collided head-on with a private Peugeot 206. The governor’s convoy was returning from Bida at the time.

Reports said the occupants of the private car included four male students suspected to be postgraduate students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and a woman identified as Nafisat Abubakar Aguye.

The crash also left several people injured, including Dauda Chikuba, Director-General of Government House, who was reportedly taken to the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Specialist Hospital in Minna for treatment.

An eyewitness alleged that the Hilux driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the collision occurred. However, the circumstances surrounding the crash have yet to be conclusively established.

The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Aishat Sa’adu, confirmed the accident, while the state police command said the incident was under investigation.

The crash has also drawn attention to emergency medical response at Minna General Hospital following reports that a medical officer complained about the availability of personnel to treat the victims. The officer was subsequently alleged to have been arrested, but the reported arrest had not been independently verified.
