First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to reduce food waste and adopt more sustainable practices as the country joins the rest of the world to mark World Cleanup Day 2026.
Tinubu made the call in a statement on Sunday to mark the day, which is being observed under the theme, “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”
She said the focus on food waste was timely amid climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges disrupting food production and supply.
The First Lady urged households, businesses, and communities to be more deliberate about how they purchase, prepare, consume, and preserve food.
She also called for proper waste disposal and other sustainable practices to protect the environment.
“Keeping our environment clean begins with reducing the waste we generate,” she said.
Tinubu added that collective action was necessary to build cleaner and healthier communities for present and future generations.
The 2026 World Cleanup Day campaign focuses on food waste as one of the largest and most preventable sources of waste. The United Nations estimates that about 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted globally in 2022.
