The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has introduced a new Medical Intervention Scheme and increased its interest-free loan facility to ₦500,000 as part of efforts to improve staff welfare.
Controller-General Olumode Adeyemi announced the initiatives on Tuesday at the inauguration of a Quarter Guard at the Service’s National Headquarters in Wuse, Abuja.
Adeyemi said the reforms, introduced shortly after he assumed office, are aimed at easing the financial burden on personnel, particularly in accessing healthcare.
According to him, the Medical Intervention Scheme will subsidize medical expenses for officers, while the loan upgrade raises the existing interest-free facility from ₦300,000 to ₦500,000.
The Controller-General also revealed that he declined a planned reception in his honor and redirected the funds to purchase mattresses and other welfare items for firefighters nationwide.
He noted that the welfare-focused approach has boosted morale within the service, citing the voluntary construction of the Quarter Guard by officers as a sign of renewed commitment.
Adeyemi described the gesture as unprecedented, adding that it reflects growing confidence in the leadership and direction of the agency.
The Federal Fire Service has faced longstanding concerns over personnel welfare due to the high-risk nature of the job. The latest measures form part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening support systems and improving operational efficiency.
