FIFA is facing criticism from Argentine media following its decision not to award Lionel Messi the Golden Ball at the 2026 World Cup.
Argentina’s hopes of securing another title ended with a 1–0 loss to Spain in Sunday’s final. The team struggled throughout the match, failing to register a shot on target, and were reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez was sent off. Spain sealed victory in extra time through Ferran Torres.
Spain’s triumph marked their second World Cup win, with standout performances earning Rodri the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
However, Argentine journalist Antonio Serpa of TyC Sports described the decision as “almost insulting,” arguing that Messi, who scored eight goals and provided four assists, deserved the award, especially in what is expected to be his final World Cup appearance.
Messi was instead named the tournament’s second-best player, a decision that has sparked debate over the criteria used for individual awards.
