FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have asked for the suspension of the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) ongoing electoral process, saying they have not reached a decision on the proposed reforms to Nigerian football.
In a September 7 communication to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, FIFA’s Chief Member Associations Officer, Elkhan Mammadov, said FIFA and CAF were still assessing the legal, governance, administrative, and electoral implications of recent developments within the federation.
The football governing bodies said no conclusions had been reached and no decision had been made on possible next steps.
FIFA and CAF also announced plans for a joint assessment mission to Abuja to meet NFF officials, members of the federation, electoral bodies, and representatives of the Federal Government, including the National Sports Commission (NSC).
The bodies asked that no further steps be taken in the NFF electoral process until the assessment is completed, saying the move was intended to preserve the status quo.
The development comes days after FIFA accepted the resignations of former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the federation’s Executive Committee, while engagements on a comprehensive reform roadmap continued.
FIFA and CAF said they would determine whether to make recommendations or proposals to their respective decision-making bodies after completing the assessment.
