The Federal Government has approved plans to develop new eastern and western electricity grids to address Nigeria’s recurring national grid collapses.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this at the Harvard Business School Association of Nigeria (HBSAN) Energy Conference in Lagos, saying the government would begin procurement for the projects, with benefits expected within two to three years.
Tegbe said a nationwide technical audit was also underway to identify faults in the transmission network and determine which facilities require urgent repairs or replacement.
He explained that the audit would help the government direct resources to the actual causes of faults, rather than spending money on the wrong equipment.
The minister attributed some of the sector’s challenges to ageing infrastructure, noting that certain transmission towers and lines date back decades.
He said strengthening the grid, particularly around the Lagos and Abuja corridors, was critical to improving electricity transmission and reducing system failures.
