Parents and relatives of pupils and teachers rescued from captivity in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State gathered at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso on Tuesday, awaiting reunions with their loved ones.
The victims are undergoing medical examinations and psychological support at the facility following their release. Hospital officials say the assessments are necessary before the children and staff are formally handed over to their families.
The group includes 39 pupils and seven teachers, among them a school principal, who were abducted on May 15, 2026. Gunmen suspected to be members of the Ansaru group attacked three schools, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; L.A. Primary School; and Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele, during the incident.
The victims regained freedom on July 10 after a coordinated security operation involving the military, police, and intelligence agencies. Authorities confirmed that some of the attackers were killed during the operation, while eight suspects were arrested.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde officially received the rescued victims on Monday, describing their safe return as a major relief after weeks of uncertainty.
