Nigeria’s Super Falcons are under pressure at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a shocking 3–2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening Group C match.
Malawi, making their first appearance at the competition, stunned the defending champions with a dominant display. Temwa Chawinga scored twice, while her sister Tabitha added another, giving the Scorchers a commanding 3–1 lead deep into stoppage time.
Nigeria responded with a Rasheedat Ajibade penalty and a late goal from Uchenna Kanu, but the comeback fell short, marking a disappointing start for Justin Madugu’s side in their title defence.
Sports analyst Ope Adebari said Malawi deserved the win, noting they outperformed Nigeria, especially in the first half.
“Malawi was the better team early on. While the coach had a decent tactical plan, the wrong players were selected to execute it,” Adebari said, adding that Nigeria struggled to match their opponent’s intensity despite second-half adjustments.
The result highlights a growing trend in African women’s football, where emerging teams are closing the gap on traditional powerhouses.
Nigeria now faces a crucial test against Zambia, who lead Group C after a convincing 3–0 win over Egypt. A second consecutive defeat would leave the Falcons on the brink of elimination.
Adebari expects a high-stakes encounter, warning that Nigeria must deliver a top performance to avoid another setback.
“If they play at their best, they can win. But if they fall short, Zambia will take advantage,” he said.
