The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of violating the terms of a court-approved medical visit while in its custody.
In a statement on Tuesday, ICPC spokesperson John Odey said the commission had facilitated the hospital visit in line with a court directive and its obligation to protect detainees’ rights.
However, the agency alleged that El-Rufai failed to appear in court on July 6, 2026, the first day of his scheduled trial at the Kaduna State High Court, after insisting on seeing his personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar.
According to the ICPC, no prior request for the consultation was made, and El-Rufai reportedly told the commission’s medical doctor he had no immediate health complaints, adding that the visit was requested by his wife and legal counsel.
Although the court later adjourned proceedings to July 15, the ICPC approved the medical visit. The commission said its officers maintained professionalism and respected El-Rufai’s privacy during the hospital visit at the National Hospital, Abuja.
However, the agency claimed it later discovered social media posts showing El-Rufai receiving multiple visitors during the consultation period, an act it described as a breach of the court-approved arrangement.
“This is a clear violation of the court order,” the ICPC stated, adding that it would report the development to the court.
The commission also confirmed the arrest of Professor Abubakar for allegedly making false statements, noting that investigations are ongoing.
The ICPC reiterated its commitment to due process, warning that it would not tolerate any abuse of its goodwill.
