Edo Assembly Impeaches Agbebaku, Rejects Resignation Claim

The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its immediate past Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, days after he announced his resignation from the position.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, announced his resignation on August 17, 2026, amid moves by lawmakers to remove him. Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I Constituency, was subsequently elected as the new Speaker.

However, during plenary on Monday, August 24, the Assembly said Agbebaku’s resignation was not officially presented or documented. The House therefore converted the earlier suspension into a formal impeachment.

The new Speaker said the impeachment notice was signed by 17 lawmakers and formally presented by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele. The motion was moved by Ojiezele and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, representing Etsako Central Constituency.

Idaiye maintained that Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office. He also directed the former Speaker to return all government property in his possession, warning that security agencies could be invited if he failed to comply.

The Assembly had earlier removed Jonathan Ibhamawu as Majority Leader and Addeh Emankhu Isibor as Deputy Majority Leader, replacing them with Ojiezele and Inegbeboh Ojie Eugene, respectively.

The development adds another twist to the leadership crisis that has unsettled the Edo Assembly since Agbebaku’s exit last week.
