Security forces in Katsina State have killed more than 40 suspected bandits after repelling a large-scale attack on Guga community in Bakori Local Government Area.
The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Muazu, said the attack took place around 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, when over 200 heavily armed gunmen stormed the village in what authorities described as a reprisal assault.
According to the government, intelligence gathered ahead of the нападение enabled security operatives to respond quickly, leading to a coordinated counterattack. The gun battle forced the assailants to retreat after suffering heavy losses.
Muazu said several senior commanders were among those killed, while the suspected leader of the group, Idi Abasu Aiki, reportedly sustained severe gunshot injuries.
Authorities said the attackers had planned to target local vigilantes and Community Watch Corps members before advancing to nearby towns.
Following the clash, security personnel launched clearance operations to recover weapons and intensify patrols in the area.
However, four vigilante members were killed after being ambushed during the incident. The state government expressed condolences to their families, describing them as having died defending their community.
Officials said normalcy has since returned to Guga and surrounding areas, with assurances that security operations will continue to prevent further attacks.
