Cardinal John Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, has raised concerns that the administration of President Bola Tinubu may undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on ARISE TV’s Prime Time on Friday, Onaiyekan alleged that the government appears determined to secure victory “by all means,” warning that such an approach could weaken public confidence in the electoral process.
He expressed doubts about the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), despite assurances from the presidency that the electoral body remains neutral.
According to the cleric, the use of state power and resources could affect the integrity of the elections, even if the process appears free and fair on the surface.
Onaiyekan cautioned that failure to reform the electoral system could lead to serious national challenges, stressing the need for credible and transparent elections.
He also warned against the emergence of a one-party state, noting that it would not benefit Nigeria’s democracy.
While acknowledging that incumbents naturally seek re-election, he emphasized that the president should be regarded as “a candidate like any other” and urged fairness in the electoral process.
The comments come amid growing political tensions and increased rhetoric from opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
