President of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has said he would rather be known for creating wealth for others than being described as Africa’s richest man.

Dangote spoke on Monday at the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) in Lagos during the launch of the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals.
“I don’t want anybody again to call me the richest man in Africa. I want to be called the wealthiest man in Africa so that I can create wealth for others,” he said.
He described the IPO as an opportunity for Nigerians and other investors to participate in the growth of the refinery and deepen ownership in Nigeria’s capital market.
The offer comprises 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares costing ₦5,250. The offer opened on September 14 and will close on October 13, 2026.
The share sale is expected to raise about ₦2.15 trillion ($1.6 billion) if fully subscribed, making it Africa’s largest IPO to date.
Dangote also acknowledged the sacrifices he made while building his business empire, particularly the time spent away from his three daughters.
