Popular Kano-based social media commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu has been killed at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
His body was reportedly found in a pool of blood at the residence on Wednesday after relatives and friends became concerned when they could not reach him.
Dan Shagamu, who was known for his political and social commentary, had previously posted videos alleging that some people in his neighborhood were threatening his life. He had also claimed that he had received death threats and attacks on his home.
A family member said he had stopped sleeping regularly at his residence because of the alleged threats and sometimes stayed with friends.
The commentator was also known for his criticism of government and political figures. In 2022, he was arrested and arraigned over alleged defamation of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.).
The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing.
Police spokesman CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the suspects were in custody and being interrogated, while forensic procedures were underway to determine the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has directed security agencies to investigate the killing and apprehend those responsible.
Amnesty International has also condemned the killing and called on the authorities to ensure that anyone responsible is brought to justice.
