Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has been elected the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) following the conclusion of the association’s 2026 national elections.
The results, announced on Sunday in Abuja by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), Aham Ejelam (SAN), showed that Badejo-Okusanya secured 12,317 votes (47.18%), defeating Lateef Akangbe (SAN), who polled 7,934 votes (30.39%), and Olumuyiwa Akinboro (SAN), who received 5,855 votes (22.43%). A total of 26,106 votes were cast.
The election faced delays due to technical issues and a cyberattack, which forced the committee to rebuild and migrate its ICT system to a more secure server before concluding the process.
Badejo-Okusanya, who will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028, becomes the second female president of the NBA after Priscilla Kuye (1991–1992).
Other elected officers include Oghenero Okoro as First Vice-President (11,024 votes), Afam Okeke as General Secretary (8,478 votes), Aghogho Gladys as Assistant General Secretary (14,312 votes), and Chinelo Audrey Ofoegbunam as Welfare Secretary (14,911 votes).
The president-elect was absent at the announcement, with her campaign team citing a flight delay. A campaign representative, Aminu Gadanya (SAN), said she remains committed to fostering unity among members.
Outgoing NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) described the election as resilient despite attempts to disrupt it, including the cyberattack. He urged the newly elected leadership to be magnanimous in victory and called on unsuccessful candidates to support the new administration.
Osigwe also announced that the electoral committee would review the process to strengthen future elections, with a focus on improving cybersecurity and restoring confidence in the NBA’s electoral system.
