Cooking Gas Hits New High Before Sallah

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, is approaching N2,000 per kilogramme in several parts of Nigeria as Muslims prepare for the 2026 Eid al-Adha celebrations.

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark the festivities.

A market survey indicates that LPG prices have risen significantly in recent weeks, increasing from below N1,000/kg to between N1,500 and N1,800 across various locations.

In the South-West, consumers report paying as high as N2,000/kg in Ogun border communities, while prices range between N1,600 and N1,700 in Lagos, Abeokuta, and Ibadan. In northern states, the product is sold between N1,800 and N2,000 per kilogramme.

The current increase marks the first price hike in 2026 and the second within seven months, following disruptions in October 2025 linked to tensions involving the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers has warned that erratic supply and rising costs could lead to shortages and further economic strain on consumers.

According to the association, LPG is now selling above N1,500/kg, while marketers pay between N25.2 million and N26.2 million for 20 metric tonnes of the product, depending on location.
