Fintech company OPay has said the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force are investigating a viral claim that it plans to shut down its operations in Nigeria.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this on Wednesday at a press conference, saying the company had provided evidence to help identify those behind the false information.
He said OPay was taking legal action against those responsible for creating and circulating the claim and warned that they would face the full consequences of the law.
Meanwhile, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, assured customers that the company remained fully operational and had no plans to leave Nigeria.
“OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere,” Adekunle said, dismissing the shutdown message as false.
The rumour followed a viral notice claiming that OPay would suspend operations from September 1, 2026, and advising customers to withdraw their funds.
OPay had earlier denied the notice and urged customers to rely on its official communication channels for information.
The company also asked an X user who shared the claim to delete the post and apologize. The user subsequently removed the post and issued an apology.
