Cash, Food, and Transfers: New Vote-Buying Trend Raises Alarm in Osun

A new pre-election report by Yiaga Africa has raised concerns about the integrity of the upcoming Osun State governorship election, citing growing cases of voter inducement.

The report, based on observations conducted between June 14 and 29, 2026, highlights widespread distribution of cash and food items by political actors and their supporters across several local government areas.

According to the organization, these activities, often presented as charity or social support, are occurring close to the election period and may influence voter decisions.

Incidents were recorded in Irepodun, Ola-Oluwa, Olorunda, and Osogbo LGAs. In Ilobu/Erin, Irepodun LGA, a group identified as “ITK Sisters” reportedly distributed cash and food items, including garri and beans. Similar distributions were observed in parts of Ola-Oluwa, Olorunda, and Osogbo.

The report also noted a more advanced method of inducement in Ife South LGA, where residents of Ara Joshua Village reportedly received N10,000 via bank transfers on July 7, with a payment description linked to a political group.

Observers said the transfers were connected to earlier data collection efforts in March, during which individuals gathered voters’ identification details, including VINs and NINs, before requesting bank information in June.

Yiaga Africa described this as a “data-driven model of voter inducement,” warning that it is harder to detect than traditional vote-buying at polling units.

The organization also expressed concern over limited voter education, especially among women, youth, and persons with disabilities. It noted that targeted voter awareness campaigns were sparse and uneven across the state.

With the election approaching, the group urged stakeholders to address these challenges to ensure a credible electoral process.
