The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has dismissed claims by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) that three herders were killed by Berom youths in Plateau State.
MACBAN, through its Plateau chairman Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, had alleged that suspected Berom militia ambushed herders grazing cattle in Tanjol, Riyom Local Government Area, on Sunday, killing three and injuring two others.
In a counter-statement, BYM spokesperson Rwang Tengwom described the claim as “false and misleading,” accusing the Gan Allah Fulani Development Association (GAFDAN) media team of spreading misinformation.
According to BYM, the incident involved an attack on Jol community by “armed Fulani terrorists,” not herders. The group said a resident, Thomas Damang, was killed, while three others sustained gunshot injuries during the assault.
BYM added that local vigilantes and security forces repelled the attackers, killing three of them and injuring five others.
The association alleged that such reports are part of a recurring pattern aimed at misrepresenting violent attacks and shielding perpetrators. It called on the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate and prosecute those responsible for spreading what it described as false narratives.
BYM also urged the federal government, civil society groups, and the international community to pay closer attention to misinformation surrounding the Plateau crisis.
