Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has revealed that his son broke three television sets while growing up, but he chose not to beat him.
Bovi made the disclosure while speaking about parenting on The Honest Bunch podcast.
According to the comedian, his son would throw objects and break things whenever he became angry. Rather than using physical punishment, Bovi said he observed his behavior and waited until he became old enough to understand his actions and show remorse.
“I don’t advocate for beating children. You should let children be. My son dey break television for the fun of it. If he’s angry, he will throw stuff and break,” he said.
Bovi said his son eventually became remorseful after breaking three TVs, adding that his ability to afford replacements also influenced how he handled the situation.
“Thank God for capacity. If I couldn’t afford another TV, then the approach would have been totally different,” he said.
The comedian also urged parents to examine their emotions before physically disciplining their children, questioning whether they are trying to correct the child or simply acting out of frustration.
“That’s why I tell people, most times when we hit kids, check: are you really trying to correct them, or you’re frustrated?” he added.
