The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has called for the resignation of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over his comparison of petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The party said the comparison ignored the wide gap in income and purchasing power between Nigerians and Britons.
Okpebholo made the comparison on September 24 while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State. He said petrol cost about N3,000 per litre in the UK after conversion to naira and argued that Nigerians were paying less.
Reacting in a statement on Sunday, APM National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, criticised the governor’s position, saying Nigerians were struggling with petrol prices of more than N1,500 per litre.
The party argued that comparing pump prices without considering workers’ incomes gave an incomplete picture of fuel affordability. It cited Nigeria’s N70,000 minimum wage and contrasted it with earnings in the UK.
The APM also pointed to differences in public transportation, arguing that Nigerians rely heavily on costly informal transport, while the UK has a more structured public transport system.
The party further cited Libya and Iran as examples of oil-producing countries where petrol is sold at much lower prices.
The APM described Okpebholo’s comparison as insensitive and urged Nigerians to support its 2027 presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde.
