Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained his decision to hand Emiliano Martinez his debut just 48 hours after the goalkeeper joined the club from Aston Villa.
Martinez went straight into the starting XI as Chelsea defeated Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, despite having had little time to train with his new teammates.
Alonso said he had no hesitation in starting the 33-year-old, citing his experience and confidence after speaking with him before the match.
“He’s a World Cup winner, 34 years old, and experienced all around. I spoke with him yesterday; we talked about the game and about our team, and he felt ready,” Alonso said.
Martinez conceded three goals but also made several important saves as Chelsea held on for victory.
Alonso praised the Argentine’s influence, saying, “He has this charisma, this aura to influence and to have a very positive connection with the rest of the team.”
Chelsea took control early through Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto, and João Pedro before Brighton fought back. Cole Palmer’s 74th-minute strike proved decisive, while Pascal Groß scored a late consolation.
The win maintained Alonso’s perfect Premier League start, with Chelsea claiming six points from their opening two league matches. The Blues will next face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on September 6.
