The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, has alleged that state governors across Nigeria are misappropriating local government allocations, pledging to grant full financial autonomy to councils if elected.
Adebutu made the remarks during a meeting with the Egba Traditional Council at the Ake Palace in Abeokuta, where he sought royal support for his 2027 governorship bid.
He said local governments must receive their funds directly, describing autonomy as a key priority of his administration.
“Local governments shall get their own money,” he said.
Adebutu further claimed that the diversion of local government funds cuts across political parties.
“It’s not a party thing… all the governors are embezzling local government allocations,” he alleged.
His comments come amid ongoing national concerns over the control of local government funds. Despite a 2024 Supreme Court ruling mandating direct allocation to councils, implementation has stalled, with states still controlling large portions of the funds.
Adebutu also criticized reliance on borrowing for infrastructure, urging alternative financing approaches while promising improved road connectivity between Ogun State and Lagos.
In separate remarks, Ogun PDP Chairman Abayomi Tella said the local government system has deteriorated due to lack of financial independence, noting that councils previously delivered more projects when they had direct access to funds.
Adebutu’s running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo, and PDP senatorial candidate Iyabo Obasanjo also urged traditional rulers to support the party, describing its team as capable of driving development in the state.
The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, expressed confidence in Adebutu, describing him as “trustworthy and reliable.”
