The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) plans to keep former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in custody until after the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi claimed that the government is deliberately making it difficult for El-Rufai to secure bail despite facing bailable charges.
Abdullahi said the party is not against lawful prosecution but raised concerns over what it described as excessive bail conditions and prolonged detention.
“We are not opposed to anyone being prosecuted if they have a legitimate case to answer,” he said. “However, when someone is held for bailable offences and the conditions for bail are made nearly impossible to meet, it suggests a deliberate attempt to keep that person in custody indefinitely.”
He further alleged that the APC is motivated by political considerations, arguing that El-Rufai’s release before the election could strengthen opposition forces.
“The thinking within the ADC is that the APC government will not release Nasir El-Rufai until after the election,” Abdullahi added. “They believe his presence could energize the opposition.”
The APC has not publicly responded to these claims.
