Veteran Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has said there is some truth to the popular claim that formal education is a “scam,” arguing that real-world skills often matter more than academic learning.
Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Joey Akan, Iyke said many former students, including himself, have gone on to outperform their lecturers in terms of financial success and career growth.
He noted that several wealthy individuals did not achieve their success through formal education, questioning the direct link between academic qualifications and prosperity.
According to Iyke, practical knowledge gained from mentors, family members, and everyday experiences played a more significant role in his success than classroom teachings.
“There is some truth to ‘school na scam.’ I am doing better than all my lecturers,” he said, recounting an encounter with a former lecturer where he believed his life trajectory had surpassed that of his teacher.
He added that advice from non-academics, such as traders and family members, helped shape his approach to life, emphasizing adaptability, critical thinking, and economic survival skills over theoretical knowledge.
While acknowledging that education has its place, Iyke maintained that it is only one part of a broader path to success.
