2027: Makinde Says Team Was Discouraged From Campaigning in Obi’s Stronghold

The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has said his campaign team was almost discouraged from taking its message to the South-East because of Peter Obi’s political influence in the region.

Makinde spoke on Thursday at the party’s town hall meeting in Enugu, where he vowed to campaign in the region despite perceptions that it was firmly behind Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate.

“When we were coming here, we were almost discouraged. People told us … the entire South-East is firmly behind him. But we said that we would not be deterred,” Makinde said.

He urged Nigerians to reject ethnic and religious divisions, arguing that the country’s challenges affect people regardless of their background.

Makinde said his proposed “Reset Nigeria” agenda focuses on economic recovery, security reforms, education and political reforms.

He added that his campaign had consulted citizens across the six geopolitical zones to incorporate their concerns into its manifesto, scheduled for unveiling on November 4, 2026.

Obi won all five South-East states in the 2023 presidential election when he contested under the Labour Party. He is now the NDC’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
