The Labour Party has urged Nigerian politicians to adopt issue-based campaigns and avoid divisive rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in Jos on Saturday during the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State Governor, Senator Jonah Jang, the party’s National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, warned that politics must not undermine national unity.
In a statement released in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, Usman stressed that while political competition is essential in a democracy, it should not breed hatred or weaken social cohesion.
“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians but a contest of ideas, competence, and character,” she said, adding that patriotism must take precedence over politics.
Usman called on political actors and their supporters to reject inflammatory language and embrace civility, tolerance, and mutual respect. She noted that democracy thrives where dialogue prevails and disagreements do not escalate into conflict.
She also urged leaders to prioritize unity, saying Nigerians deserve leadership that inspires hope and bridges ethnic, religious, and political divides.
Commenting on Jang’s milestone, Usman described him as a patriot whose career reflects dedication to national service, noting that his legacy underscores the importance of honor and leadership in public office.
