Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and confirmation of former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Fasina as a non-career ambassador.

Speaking on Arise Television on Thursday, Tietie described the decision as a “mistake,” citing unresolved allegations against Fasina, including sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization, matters reportedly still before the court.
Despite protests by civil society groups at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, urging lawmakers to halt the process, the Nigerian Senate proceeded to confirm Fasina’s appointment on Thursday.
Tietie argued that appointing individuals facing serious allegations sends the wrong message about governance and accountability.
“An ambassador represents the president abroad. At a time when Nigeria needs to project integrity, such decisions undermine public trust,” he said.
He added that even in the absence of a court ruling, the pending nature of the allegations should have warranted caution.
“The Senate should have waited. Society is changing, and issues once ignored can no longer be overlooked,” Tietie stated.
