Kyari Pushes Back on Arrest Warrant, Says He Notified Lawmakers

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, has responded to the arrest warrant issued against him by the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, describing the decision as unexpected.

In a formal letter to the committee, Kyari stated that he had previously informed lawmakers of his inability to attend the hearing due to ongoing medical treatment outside Nigeria.

He referenced earlier correspondence dated May 11, 2026, in which he communicated his absence and expressed readiness to honour the committee’s invitation upon his return. He also requested the option of submitting written responses to urgent queries.

Kyari insisted that he had not deliberately avoided the panel, maintaining that he remained willing to cooperate fully with the legislative inquiry.

He further stated that he had not received any fresh invitation requiring his physical presence before the committee, adding that he would have attended if properly notified.

The Senate panel had issued the warrant following his absence from a session investigating financial records of the NNPCL, including allegations involving over ₦210 trillion.

Kyari, who is currently undergoing medical care abroad, reiterated his commitment to appear before the committee once his treatment is completed.

He also urged the lawmakers to channel any inquiries through his legal representatives to ensure prompt responses in the interim.
