The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, says it plans to fund its 2027 election campaign through small donations from ordinary Nigerians to reduce the influence of wealthy individuals in politics.
NDC National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson disclosed this on Arise TV’s Prime Time program on Wednesday.
Dickson said Nigerians would be able to contribute as little as N1,000 or N2,000 to support the party’s activities.
He said the party did not want Nigeria’s democracy to depend on wealthy individuals who could use government resources to influence elections.
“You cannot allow your democracy to be funded by moneybags and billionaires who are now trillionaires using government resources,” Dickson said.
The former Bayelsa governor also said the party was consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council and would announce its members soon.
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure free and credible elections in 2027.
The development comes as the NDC says its operations and election activities are being funded through donations, levies, and contributions from members, aspirants, stakeholders, and supporters.
