Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has alleged that Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodinma, is seeking to become Senate President in 2027.
Wike said Uzodinma’s ambition was behind the opposition of APC governors to his Rainbow Coalition, a political platform he says is mobilizing support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
He made the allegation on Monday during an interview with TVC News.
The controversy followed the decision of APC governors to reject political alliances they believe could weaken the party or affect its candidates in the 2027 elections. Uzodinma announced the position after a meeting of the governors last week.
Wike, however, said the governors’ concerns were linked to Uzodinma’s reported plan to return to the Senate after his tenure as governor and seek the Senate presidency.
He also maintained that President Tinubu was aware of his activities and the Rainbow Coalition.
“All this noise against the Rainbow Coalition is about the ambition of Governor Hope Uzodinma to be Senate President in 2027.
“President Tinubu knows about the Rainbow Coalition. There is nothing that I am doing that he is not aware of.”
Wike had earlier described the APC governors as “politically lazy” over their opposition to the coalition, insisting that his support for Tinubu did not mean the PDP could not field candidates for other positions in 2027.
Uzodinma and the APC Governors Forum have not publicly accepted Wike’s allegation about the governor’s Senate ambition. Their stated position is that they will not support arrangements capable of weakening the APC or affecting its candidates in the 2027 elections.
