The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticized Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, saying his early attempt to build an independent political structure was a major mistake.
Speaking during a media chat in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Wike said Fubara began making moves to establish his own base less than 100 days after assuming office, a decision he described as premature and politically risky.
According to Wike, the move signalled a disregard for the political structure and support system that brought the governor to power. He added that such actions created room for opposition forces to gain influence within the administration.
Wike said he had expected his successor to build on the foundation he laid, including major infrastructure projects like the Port Harcourt Ring Road and 12 flyovers constructed during his tenure.
He noted that his goal was for Rivers State to gradually compete with Lagos in infrastructure and development but argued that recent developments have widened that gap.
The former Rivers governor also dismissed allegations that he demanded money from Fubara, describing such claims as typical of political disagreements.
“I have no reason to ask for money,” Wike said, pointing to the N1.8 trillion budget of the Federal Capital Territory under his supervision.
He maintained that his primary interest was for the state to remain stable and for ongoing projects to be sustained, stressing that political leaders must carefully assess advice and alliances, especially early in office.
