Resident doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) in Kwara State have suspended a strike launched after a female doctor was assaulted by a patient’s relative.
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) had begun a five-day industrial action to protest the incident, which occurred at the hospital’s Pediatrics Emergency Department on Wednesday. The strike was called off on Friday following the intervention of key stakeholders.
The assault allegedly involved Emmanuel Olatunji, whose two-year-old child died while receiving treatment. Reports indicate that he returned to the hospital hours after leaving the child with the mother and attacked the doctor, who had reportedly used her personal funds to provide an admission pack for the child.
The strike disrupted services on Thursday and Friday, leaving several patients unattended.
In a statement issued on Friday, UITH management condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable. The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of staff and patients, stressing a zero-tolerance policy for any form of violence against healthcare workers.
Management also noted that complaint channels are in place for patients and relatives, while security has been strengthened across the facility to prevent further incidents.
The hospital confirmed that the suspect is being processed for arraignment and expressed support for the doctors in pursuing legal action.
UITH reiterated its commitment to delivering quality healthcare in a safe and respectful environment.
