Two female students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), who were abducted during a security incident on September 6, 2026, have regained their freedom.
FUTO’s Students’ Union Government confirmed their release on Thursday, September 10, saying the students were now safe.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu, also said the students were receiving medical and psychological support at the FUTO Medical Centre.
He said Vice-Chancellor Prof. I.N.S. Dozie had visited the students following their release.
FUTO management commended the police and other security agencies for their intervention and assured students and staff that additional security measures were being sustained around the institution.
The students were abducted during a September 6 attack at the university, during which a visitor was fatally shot. Security agencies have since intensified patrols around FUTO and neighboring communities.
