President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to achieve 95 percent National Identification Number (NIN) coverage by December 2026.
Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday in Abuja during the 8th National Identity Day celebration. He was represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The President said NIN enrollment had risen to about 142 million, from just over 80 million when his administration assumed office, and urged NIMC to close the remaining gap.
He said the government was developing digital infrastructure to make the national identity system a foundation for Nigeria’s digital economy and access to public services.
According to him, a secure national ID should support services including banking, healthcare, education, welfare payments, and transportation.
Tinubu also said the government was working to strengthen digital trust by securing online documents, electronic signatures, and transactions.
NIMC has been expanding enrollment through ward-level registration, mobile enrollment, and licensed registration agents as part of efforts to widen coverage.
