Tinubu Pledges Army Upgrade Amid Rising Security Threats

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to modernizing the Nigerian Army as the country faces escalating security challenges.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Port Harcourt, the President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said the government would deploy emerging technologies and strengthen operational capacity to improve combat readiness and response to threats.

Tinubu said investments in research, development, and local defense production are gaining momentum, with renewed focus on revitalizing the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to boost indigenous manufacturing and support counter-terrorism efforts.

He also welcomed the African Land Forces Forum, describing it as a platform to deepen regional security cooperation and enhance Nigeria’s defense diplomacy.

The President commended troops for their sacrifices and pledged continued support for families of fallen soldiers, urging personnel to uphold professionalism and protect citizens’ rights.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara praised the Army’s progress in technology and manpower development, calling for improved welfare for soldiers to enhance performance.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said over 80 percent of Nigerian troops are currently deployed in operations nationwide. He warned of increasing infiltration by jihadist groups from neighboring countries but assured that the Army remains prepared to confront emerging threats.

Shaibu added that the Army is closely monitoring instability in the Sahel region and remains committed to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty.

The event, themed “Protecting the People and Serving the Nation,” featured military drills, aerial displays, and parades, with top government officials, military leaders, and international dignitaries in attendance.
