Rooney Criticizes Portugal Teammates After World Cup Exit

Former England and Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has criticized Portugal’s players, including Bruno Fernandes, following their exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Rooney said Portugal failed to make the most of Cristiano Ronaldo’s strengths, accusing teammates of neglecting opportunities to deliver effective crosses into the penalty area. Instead, he noted, the team often opted to pass the ball around without creating clear chances for their captain.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo, according to Rooney, remains most dangerous inside the box, particularly during set pieces. However, he struggled to make an impact due to a lack of service in key areas.

“When you are playing with Cristiano Ronaldo, you must use him properly,” Rooney said. “Don’t give him the ball 30 yards from goal; that’s no longer his strength. Get the ball into the box where he can still be effective.”

Rooney singled out Bruno Fernandes for not fully utilizing Ronaldo’s positioning and attacking ability throughout the tournament.

Portugal were eliminated after Spain secured a late 91st-minute winner through substitute Mikel Merino, sending them out before the quarter-finals.

Fernandes endured a quiet campaign, registering just one assist in five matches.
