Rivers varsity suspends SUG Week after student is shot on campus

A 100-level student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, was reportedly injured in a shooting on the campus on Wednesday.

The incident occurred two days after suspected rival cult groups were involved in a shooting confrontation on the university campus.

A source familiar with Wednesday’s incident said the injured student was taken to a hospital, where doctors were preparing to remove bullet pellets reportedly lodged in his body.

The source said the student’s friends were also raising funds to pay for the surgery.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for Wednesday’s shooting, and there was no independent confirmation that the victim belonged to any cult group.

A video circulating online showed the injured student on a hospital bed before some of his coursemates reportedly brought him back to the university.

The Rivers State Police Command had earlier confirmed Monday’s clash, reportedly involving suspected members of the Vikings and Ku Klux Klan groups.

Police spokesperson Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said she had seen the video of Wednesday’s incident and would obtain more information from the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area.

Meanwhile, IAUE management has suspended all remaining activities scheduled for the Students’ Union Government Week with immediate effect.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the university’s Registrar, Dr. Chinonye Ajie, directed students to return to normal academic activities on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

Management also warned students against actions capable of disrupting academic activities or threatening peace and security on campus.

IAUE has previously taken disciplinary action against students over alleged cultism and possession of firearms, reflecting longstanding concerns over cult-related violence in and around the institution.
