The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has directed its members nationwide to inspect their fuel dispensing meters following concerns raised by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) over under-dispensing.
PETROAN National President Billy Gillis-Harry disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He said the association held an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday after the NMDPRA raised concerns about inaccurate fuel dispensing at retail outlets. Members were subsequently directed to check their equipment and correct any faults.
Gillis-Harry said worn or faulty equipment could cause pumps to dispense either less or more fuel than the quantity paid for by motorists.
He urged filling station operators to ensure their meters accurately dispense the quantity shown on the pump, while advising motorists to monitor the meter during purchases and request receipts.
The PETROAN president also said the association works with the NMDPRA and the Weights and Measures Division of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to maintain accurate dispensing equipment.
The directive follows an NMDPRA warning that it had detected cases of under-dispensing at retail outlets nationwide. The regulator ordered operators to immediately calibrate and verify their dispensers and totalizers, warning that persistent or serious violations could lead to sanctions, including licence revocation.
Gillis-Harry said PETROAN was taking the warning seriously and had begun engaging its members to identify and fix possible equipment faults.
