Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has initiated legal proceedings against his former associate and kinsman, Kenneth Okonkwo, over allegations described as defamatory.

The suit, dated June 9, 2026, and filed by his counsel, Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN), challenges claims made by Okonkwo accusing Obi and certain party leaders of demanding ₦10 million from aspirants seeking tickets to contest for seats in the House of Representatives.
In the legal filing, Obi’s lawyers rejected the allegations, asserting that they were entirely unfounded and injurious to his reputation. They argued that the statements portrayed him as engaging in bribery, fraud, and other criminal acts without any supporting evidence.
The legal team further stated that the remarks, which were reportedly made during a televised broadcast and subsequently circulated across digital platforms, had caused significant reputational damage.
According to the suit, the comments falsely suggested that Obi personally compiled candidate lists, solicited illicit payments, and engaged in financial misconduct, all of which the lawyers insist are baseless.
Obi is demanding that Okonkwo retract the statements in full, issue an unequivocal public apology across all media platforms, and provide assurances against further defamatory publications. The suit also seeks financial compensation for damages.
His legal representatives emphasised that while freedom of expression is protected, it does not extend to statements capable of harming another individual’s integrity without factual basis.
The dispute follows recent political tensions between both men after Okonkwo exited the African Democratic Congress and publicly criticised Obi.
