The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has explained its poor showing in the August 15 Osun State governorship election, saying it worked with the Accord Party to prevent the All Progressives Congress (APC) from winning.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this during an interview with Trust TV, saying the party anticipated that a split in opposition votes could give the APC an advantage.
According to him, the ADC therefore chose to collaborate with Accord, which was eventually declared the winner of the election.
“We saw the possibility earlier enough that if we decided to go full throttle, the possibility that the opposition would divide the votes and the APC would take the victory was there,” Abdullahi said.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Accord candidate Ademola Adeleke the winner with 511,067 votes, ahead of APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes.
ADC candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.
Despite the wide gap between its candidate and the two leading contenders, Abdullahi said the ADC did not regard the result as a failure, arguing that its broader objective was to prevent the APC from reclaiming power in Osun.
The development comes amid wider efforts by opposition parties to work together against the APC ahead of the 2027 general election.
