The Ondo State House of Assembly has suspended plenary sessions amid a deepening leadership crisis involving Speaker Olamide Oladiji.
Assembly spokesperson, Olatunji Ifabiyi, said on Monday that lawmakers would not reconvene until the Speaker steps down. He noted that the majority of members support his removal.
The crisis stems from allegations that the Speaker unilaterally altered the 2025 budget of the Ondo State Oil Producing Development Commission (OSOPADEC), valued at ₦9.2 billion.
According to reports, 21 out of the 26 lawmakers have signed a resolution to impeach the Speaker if he refuses to resign.
“We have resolved not to hold plenary until there is a change of Speaker,” Ifabiyi said, adding that lawmakers are prepared to proceed with impeachment if necessary.
However, a senior Assembly official, who spoke anonymously, said the state executive had intervened and that a resolution may have been reached after a closed-door meeting on Sunday. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.
The official expressed optimism that plenary would resume soon, suggesting that internal mechanisms are being used to address the dispute.
Meanwhile, an alleged assassination threat against a lawmaker has been reported to security authorities for investigation.
The political standoff continues to cast uncertainty over legislative activities in the state.
