Onanuga: Critics prepared responses before Tinubu’s speech

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticized politicians who condemned the President’s Independence Day address, accusing them of preparing their responses before hearing the speech.

Onanuga made the remarks in a post on X on Friday, October 2, saying the critics appeared to have ignored Tinubu’s position on the government’s economic reforms.

He highlighted Tinubu’s argument that the reforms did not create Nigeria’s economic weaknesses but were introduced to address them.

“Our reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them,” Tinubu said in his October 1 address.

The President also rejected calls to reverse the reforms and return to fuel subsidies, describing such appeals as a “siren song” and subsidies as “addictive.”

Tinubu further said Nigeria’s economy had grown by more than four per cent in 2026, with both the oil and non-oil sectors contributing to what he described as a period of stable growth.

Onanuga urged the President’s critics to consider these points from the address rather than dismissing the reforms.
